Geography
Geography is an experimental series of embroidered images from the 1970s sexual education text The Cunt Coloring Book. Geography explores diverse representations of the vulva and disrupts pornography-driven representations of "neat" vulvas with small labia.
The socially constructed image of the "perfect vulva" has trickled into the lives of many girls and women who are expressing fear and anxiety that their bodies are abnormal because they have not seen images of labia that are similar to their own. As a result, labiaplasty (i.e., the surgical reduction of the labia) is the fastest growing form of plastic surgery despite concerns of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Specifically, there are concerns that the procedure is not medically indicated or standardized and is ethically questionable.
